Happy snowy Monday morning! Are we all ready for this to be over yet? I’ve noticed all the travel commercials on TV lately, must be that season! This week, in case you’re not aware, is Singles Awareness Day on Friday (aka Valentine’s Day). Pretty much every restaurant in the city is hosting some sort of Valentines day event, but I’ve highlighted some more unusual ones on the Events Calendar. Don’t wait too long to make your reservations though!
As we inch closer to the NHL trade deadline, there still isn’t much going on, but that’s likely to change. The big question for the Sens this year is, will JG still be part of the team after February? We’ll find out in the next two weeks! For now, let’s continue to support them and head out to at least one of the three home games this week. On Thursday, the Arizona Coyotes are in town; Saturday, the evil Toronto Maple Leafs are here, and then Sunday it’s the Dallas Stars with a 6pm start. At TD Place, the Ottawa 67’s are hosting the Windsor Spitfires on Sunday at 2pm.
In theatre, “The Neverending Story” continues until February 16th at the NAC with a tale that transforms a little boys life while he’s reading a story in his attic, as he realizes that he’s more than just a reader, he’s a vital part of the outcome. At Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe, Suzart’s latest “Suzart After Dark” production begins on Wednesday with “9 to 5” for four nights only. The cast looks great for this show, I can’t wait to see it! At the Gladstone this week, the latest by Pierre Brault, “5 O’Clock Bells!” kicks off tonight and runs for two weeks.
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, I’m hoping to keep the festival section alive all year now. And this week is another success! Winterlude continues for it’s final week, throughout the city, and also Undercurrents will be running at Arts Court through the week until February 15th. New this week on the festival scene is the annual Bachata Festival from February 14th to 17th at LabO on Waller Street.
Concert Pick(s) of the Week!
There are some fantastic local artists playing in different venues around the city that are definitely worth seeing. On Valentines day, Tara Holloway will be performing at Shanghai, and JW Jones will be at Greenfields. On Sunday, Choir! Choir! Choir! is at the NAC but I do believe tickets are sold-out, so you’ll have to find them elsewhere. Like Kijiji or it appears as though StubHub has a few still available.
Event Highlight of the Week!
There’s a recurring event happening at the Canadian Museum of Nature this Saturday night. If you haven’t heard of it, you should really check it out as it looks like a ton of fun and it’s certainly on my bucket list! Nature Sleepover for Adults takes place in the museum where you can hang out with the dinosaurs while taking part in a variety of activities including kombucha tasting, meditation, live music, a movie marathon, and then wake up with a yoga session. Such a great idea!!
