January wraps up this week, and with February starting, the winter festivals are starting! A highlights this week is the Ottawa Winter Jazz Festival Thursday to Saturday at Arts Court, which signals the beginning of Winterlude!! This famous Ottawa Festival starts Friday and runs until February 17th. There are simply too many events to list on my calendar, so I’ve put up a summary for each day. Peruse the summaries and plan your time, it looks like so much fun! February 7-9 is the main weekend, with Hometown Hockey, Ice Dragon Boat Races and the Fire and Ice Festival….but that doesn’t mean you have to wait until then, there are plenty of great activities before that.
Sports:
This weekend is Superbowl!! I’ve put together a list of some of the places to watch the game in Ottawa. You can see that list by clicking here! The venue that stood out to me was the Rideau Carleton Casino (future Hard Rock); just $40 gets you into the party, 2 drink vouchers, $20 in casino free-play, a pound of wings, and a live cheer-leading performance! As if that’s not enough, The Trews will be performing a concert before the game!! You can’t beat this deal!
Now that the NHL All-Star game is over, we can get on with the regular season again. Trade deadline is a month away, so expect the rumour mill to pick up! I don’t anticipate too much change in Ottawa, at least it won’t be like the fire sale last year. Monday night, the Sens kick off their second half playing host to the New Jersey Devils, and then on Friday night, the Washington Capitals are in town. In the Glebe, the Ottawa 67’s have one home game this week, on Saturday afternoon at 2pm versus the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Theatre:
In theatre, the long anticipated “Wolves” hits the stage at the Gladstone. This Theatre Kraken presentation, written by Sarah Dalappe is expected to be incredible, and I can’t wait to see it! This week at the GCTC, Kiinalik: These Sharp Tools continues daily. At Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe, Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet (ASNY) is putting on the Little Mermaid for 10 days starting on Friday.
Concert Pick(s) of the Week!
There are a couple of incredible concerts this week. On Friday night, Half Moon Run are playing at TD Place. There are still some tickets available through the TD Place Box Office, or through StubHub at this link! Also on Friday night, the Jim Cuddy Band is at the NAC!
Event Highlight of the Week!
My highlight of the week is more of a special “day” than a specific event, but there’s an event tied in anyway! National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is on Saturday. Each year, The Merry Dairy celebrates this incredible holiday with special treats, and this year you can get free hot chocolate or coffee courtesy of Equator Coffee in Westboro! Don’t forget to wear your pajamas.
