Covert Ottawa Weekly Newsletter: Ottawa Events December 23rd – 29th

Merry Christmas week! The big day has been creeping up, and suddenly, with seemingly no notice at all, it has arrived! Hopefully all your baking and shopping and fussing and cleaning and decorating is done so you can relax and actually enjoy the holidays.

Christmas has been so commercialized and we put an unreasonable amount of stress and pressure on ourselves to shop for other people, that we’ve forgotten that it’s supposed to be about family and friends, and that we need to take some time off and enjoy life. I know that’s easily said, but we really need to consider what’s most important in life, stuff to fill the house, or happiness? Remember, that often the best present is an experience, and not a plastic or electronic item found in a store. Let’s keep the environment in mind through the holidays while wrapping presents and opening all our newly purchased goods. As cheesy as it sounds, let’s remember our 3 R’s that were beaten into us in school; everything we do as individuals affects our planet, so let’s do our part and reduce waste where we can.

Now on to the events. Hopefully you have some time off and can head out and enjoy some of the great holiday experiences in Ottawa. There are several daily events throughout the city that are designed for families or adults that you can take part in, so why not?? First, the Ottawa Christmas Glow continues at the EY Centre each day (except the 25th) and is just an incredible event, that is beyond words. But in an attempt at using words,  you can read my review on it here. Secondly, Christmas Lights Across Canada continue each day on Parliament Hill, and at Confederation Park, so why not get out to this free activity and enjoy the beauty of downtown Ottawa at Christmas time. Finally, the Magic of Lights Christmas drive-through takes place daily at Wesley Clover Park in the west end.

There are theatrical options this week in Ottawa, which is unusual for Christmas week. The incredible Shen Yun – Experience a Divine Culture is on at the NAC from Boxing Day until the 28th with only four shows. Kanata Theatre has it’s production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” with six shows between Friday and next Monday. I saw this a couple years ago at Centrepointe, and it was really fun!

The Ottawa Senators (who are now resembling a hockey team again) have two home games this week. Monday, the Buffalo Sabres are visiting the Canadian Tire Centre, then after the Christmas break, the New Jersey Devils are here on Sunday. Also, Sunday afternoon, the Ottawa 67’s have a home game versus the Peterborough Petes at TD Place.

Concert Picks of the Week!

Given that it’s Christmas week, there aren’t as many touring bands in the area, but we’ve still got some great tunes happening around town! First, my top pick of the week, is Montreal based Slim Moore, who’s playing at the Rainbow on Friday night. I’ve seen him the last two years at the Tweed Shindig, and he’s just incredible. Such a smooth soulful sound, I love him! Then on Saturday, also at the Rainbow, the incredible guitarist, Tony D will be putting on a show. For any Tragically Hip fans, Little Bones (Hip tribute band) is performing on Friday night at Greenfields.

This week will not be eventful for me for Ottawa events. I’m taking a trip out west to visit the in-laws for Christmas. So have a very merry Christmas everyone, and I’ll be back with an update next week!!
