Ottawa Event Announcement: The Eve Film Festival schedule has been released!!

The 2019 Eve Film Festival schedule has been released! Any film buff will love this line up of fantastic screenings!! Find the full program below and then buy your tickets as soon as possible, as it’s sure to sell out!! Eve Film Fest (EFF) is a feminist event that showcases and supports work by women (cis and trans) and genderqueer directors in film. They provide a forum for underrepresented filmmakers from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and stages in their career to present and calibrate their art.

There are eight different film segments for the festival. Tickets are $10 per segment, or $25 for a full festival pass. Tickets for the individual segments are available on the event page (links in each segment below) and the Full Festival Pass can be purchased by clicking here!

In addition to the film screenings, the Eve Film Festival in collaboration with Digi60 presents Womxn in film and entertainment Lunch and Speed mentoring event! October 26, 2019 at 11:45am at the Arts Court Theatre (2 Daly Ave) This event is for womxn in film, media and entertainment. Come meet like-minded individuals, network, get mentored by the best in Ottawa and Montreal and eat great food! Your ticket will include your lunch, networking, one ticket to the local film segment following this event (1:30pm) and and speed mentoring with the following talented mentors:

Segment #4 – Short Films: Coming of Age

Arianna is a 15 years old teenager trapped in a body that she does not fully know, however she is starting to understand it through a relation born on a web chat with a much more mature man. Beside being unconsciously manipulated, Arianna discovers her sexuality and her self-eroticism through this way of interaction, bringing her to discover the world and leading her to a strong conflict both internal and with her mother.

BLOODY HELL | Katharina Hingst | 7:31 | United Kingdom | 2018

When Camille wakes up on the morning of her 16th birthday the world seems to have changed over night. Nothing makes sense and everything sucks. While impatiently waiting to finally start her first period, she’s challenged with the emotional stages of premenstrual chaos, struggling to break free to begin her transition into womanhood.

In the twilight of rap’s golden era, an upcoming LA emcee named Tracey finds freedom and escape dancing alone to an inner soundtrack on headphones, masking the secret in loud boom bap from his stereo speakers. Malik, his overbearing older brother ruptures this world as he enters the room, suspiciously lagging as if waiting for the unknown to be revealed. Bursting into freestyle over the music of their mind, their mutual love of Hip Hop and the prospect of fame cools the flame – at least for the moment.

A film about a young social worker whose work revolves around family violence, her perspectives on the issue and how the work personally affects her.

Segment #5 – Feature Film: Life or Rain

LIFE OR RAIN | Lavinie Boffy | 1 hour, 30 minutes | France | 2019

A choral film which recounts the life choices of women in the same family throughout a century. Director Lavinie Boffy reminisces her childhood in a family mainly composed of women. Through the portrait of each one of them, it is the portrait of the construction of a female identity that is gradually taking shape. The story alternates between the director’s look at herself as a child and at her ancestors. With the help of an intimate voice-over, the film shares a woman’s questioning about how to define her place in the world.

Segment #6 – Short Films: The Lighter Side

HATCH | Heather Perluzzo | 19:00 | Canada | 2019

After Marcy Martens suffers a horrible miscarriage, she is plagued with daily reminders that keep her bound to her solitude. One night, she discovers a strange alien egg buried in her backyard. She brings it inside, apprehensive at first, but begins to form a motherly bond with it. Marcy must now decide if she’s really ready to move on from her loss and take care of this bizarre little creature.

BREECH | Rebecca Lafon | 10:37 | USA | 2019

Frankie, 16 years old and 6 months pregnant, meets with her two closest friends to figure out how to ditch the gender-reveal party her mother is throwing. In denial of her pregnancy and convinced she remains the alpha of the team, her world starts to crumble as she realizes her teenage years are disappearing and the perception she has of the world is just fantasy.

This is the story of a hard-working family in an Israeli suburb in the seventies. Each parent uses their kids to their advantage while giving them responsibilities they cannot hold. The kids try to imitate their parent’s behavior in order to survive. We follow the family’s reality from the kids’ point of view, the lays and manipulation of the adults, the messages thy deliver to their children, those that will make them how they are.

A comedic short film about a Filipina-Canadian girl who defies her mother’s warning that she will turn into a boy if she plays basketball. (Spoiler Alert: She doesn’t!)

MOUCHETTE ON EAST 4TH | Gaby Leyner | 12:38 | USA | 2019

Lilah and Dan, two film students, go for drinks after their second dinner date. Dan’s remarks and his conversation with his friend, the bartender, become increasingly condescending and vaguely misogynistic. Lilah offers, as a rebuke, her inspired reenactment of the climactic scene from a classic French movie about a silenced young woman.

“We decided to get the band in front of the camera really quick so I threw every piece of sports equipment I had in a car and drove through the night to get to Windsor. Was really stoked to work with Partner who are some great women doing fun things in music and wrestle around in sports and comedy. Women really do not get nearly enough screen time in sports and it’s a total sexist shame – here’s to the future of increased representation for all folks left off screen.”

Segment #7 – Short Films: Empowerment of the Self

TIGHT, NO PAIN | Isabella Carrera| 10:07 | Canada | 2019

Three women share their intimate experiences battling vaginismus, a sexual condition that makes penetration extremely painful and often even impossible. Their personal tales reveal how it affected their health, self-esteem, body image, romantic relationships and perception on what it means to be a woman.

MEMENTO MORI | Anna Barker| 6:32 | Canada | 2018

Sitting in the middle of a grassy field, Louella, a young woman coming to terms with her cancer diagnosis, is faced not only with cancer itself but also with an onslaught of opinions from those sitting opposite to her. As the people in her life flash before her, Louella experiences a surreal journey from diagnosis to remission. Although cancer proves to be an intimidating entity, Louella decides to take back control on how she perceives her fear.

ONE MORE DAY | Brenda Grzetic | 13:42 | Nigeria | 2019

The film documents the experiences of a woman Correctional Officer – Lisa Snook – who worked for 25 years in Corrections and retired from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary for men in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. It follows her on her last day of work as she reflects on the gendered interactions between correctional officers, prison management and inmates, and the coping strategies that she developed at a young age.

A group of film students host a back-to-school double feature at their local theatre. Amid the costumes and bands of the after-party, three masked men lock Auryon and her friends, Diane and Rebecca, in the projection room. Auryon is forced to watch as her friends are attacked. Six months later, the main perpetrator is free to roam the streets again while Diane remains unresponsive.

It’s the summer of 1937. Something is living in the corn field. Young Ida doesn’t know what it is, but it seems to understand her better than anyone else on her uncle’s farm.

When Wenonah and Luc’s mother dies they must live with their overbearing father on his fur trade expedition and find a way to stand up to him to stop Wenonah’s arranged marriage. This 1700s period piece explores both the realities women and Metis people faced at this time in Canadian history. Wenonah brings to life and celebrates strong, diverse characters. Although the film takes place in the past, the story draws many parallels to the modern narrative women face today.

LAST STAND TO NOWHERE | Michelle Muldoon| 14:58 | Canada | 2018

The Clantons; horse thieves, cattle rustlers, sisters who believe that the town’s fortunes are theirs for the taking. The Earps are the strong arm of justice; sisters raised by a hard-nosed father to unflinchingly right the wrongs of a cruel world. Last Stand to Nowhere is an all-female re-imagining of the most famous gunfight in the history of the West; the ultimate family feud that finds its resolution at the end of a gun barrel at the OK Corral.

A LAND SHAPED BY WOMEN | Anne-Flore Marxer| 25:00 | France | 2018

The movie is an inspirational depiction of their journey across Iceland, where the two Freeride World Champions explore the country in a van through the adventure sports they are passionate about: snowboarding and surfing. On the road they meet inspirational Icelandic women to understand their mindset living in a country with a rich history in gender equality.
