Happy Long weekend everyone! I’m sorry the weather is not perfect today, but we can use a little rain every once in a while. The rest of the weekend was fantastic, so we can’t complain. It’s back to school now for most of the kiddies so us parents can have a break and go to some events!
Let’s dive right into those events. This week is a great mix of things to do around Ottawa and is officially the kick-off of theatre season. The first Orpheus production of the season is on this week at the Gladstone theatre. Falsettos opens Wednesday and has a short run until Saturday. Come From Away continues all week at the National Arts Centre and runs until Sunday. I was lucky to see it last week, and it was as amazing as I had expected. I laughed and cried through the whole show, it was quite possibly one of the most emotional and hilarious shows I’ve seen. What an all-round great performance. If you haven’t been able to see it, unfortunately, I’m pretty sure that it’s entirely sold out for the remainder of the shows here.
Festival season continues to roll on here in Ottawa. Today, Monday, you can catch the last day of the Ottawa Serbian Festival which is taking place at St. Stephan Serbian Orthodox Church and Events Centre. This weekend, on Saturday only, you should head down to the Wellington West/Hintonburg/Preston area and see the ever expanding Ottawa Porchfest. There are random shows on people’s front porches and store fronts through that whole neighbourhood. Then in the evening, there’s a more formal aspect to the festival at Parkdale Park. Check it out and support local bands. Also on Saturday evening, from 4-9pm, you can head over to the Beechwood community for Beechfest. It’s a combination of food, arts and music.
With the calendar rolling over into September, the last of the summer activities is wrapping up this week. The daily Northern Lights show is into its final week at Parliament Hill with shows starting at 8:30 in September.
Also ending this week with the end of the summer is The Ottawa Champions season. Their last game is today, Monday, at 1:30 against the Quebec Capitales. Saturday afternoon, the Redblacks are back in town to take on the visiting Toronto Argos. Also, hockey is just around the corner, and the Ottawa 67’s are looking to have another fantastic year. They’re hosting a season kick off party this Thursday night at 6pm at the Horticulture Building.
Where will I be??
Wednesday night, I’m heading out to see the Falcettos at the Gladstone Theatre, Orpheus always does such an amazing job, I can’t wait to see this play. Saturday, I plan on doing a little tour, weather permitting. I’d like to head into Orleans and see the Forest Valley Food Truck Rally, you can’t go wrong with that line up of Ottawa’s best food trucks. Also Saturday, I may go check out Back to the Future II, the latest Capital Pop-Up Cinema show, and then also obviously some of Porchfest would be great! Sunday, I’ll be attending the monthly Sports Card and Comic show at Jim Durrell.
As promised last week, I’ve written my review on the Smith’s Falls Shindig. It was a great mix of excellent musicians and not so excellent musicians. You can read all about it by clicking here!
