Covert Ottawa Weekly Update: Ottawa Events August 26th – September 1st

Well, it’s finally here, the last week of summer vacation. This weekend is the labour day long weekend, which typically means a little slower for major events in Ottawa. It’s your last weekend with the kids and then they’re mostly off to school again soon. So let’s all enjoy this last week of summer vacation and finish the season with a bang!

Although it’s labour day weekend, there are still festivals going on in Ottawa! We’ll start with the inaugural season of Joyfest! JoyFest is a two-day summer festival taking place on Saturday and Sunday, held just outside of Ottawa at the Carp Ridge Ecowellness Centre. It is brimming with live music, song, dance, laughter, cirque, drumming, art, nature, inspiration, conversation, storytelling and sensorial celebration! Why not check it out?? Next, for three days starting on Saturday, you can head out to the Ottawa Serbian Festival taking place at St. Stephan Serbian Orthodox Church and Events Centre. If the Latin touch is more your thing, then you can head down to Sparks Street for the Latin Parade, and the Latin Festival at Ottawa City Hall, both on Sunday!

Come From Away” continues all week at the National Arts Centre and runs until September 8th. If you haven’t heard about this, you definitely should look it up, it looks and sounds amazing!!! I can’t wait to go see it! I have some StubHub ticketing options on each daily listing for the event if you’re still looking for tickets. Cirque du Soleil – Alegria is entering its final week here in Ottawa at the Zibi site across from the War Museum in Gatineau. Tickets are selling fast so get yours soon! (ticketing options can also be found on the daily events on my site) The daily Northern Lights show continues each day on Parliament Hill, starting at 9:30 in August, and moving to 9pm Starting Saturday night for the remaining September shows.

We’ve got lots of baseball this week in Ottawa. The Ottawa Champions kick off a three-game series against the Rockland Boulders on Tuesday, and then play out their final three games of the season starting Friday against the Quebec Capitales. This will be your last chance this year to take in some baseball! Also for sports, the Ottawa Fury FC have a match against the visiting Pittsburgh Riverhounds Friday night at TD Place.

A full list of this week’s events can be found here!!

Where will I be??

This week is an exciting one for me!! Wednesday night, I’ll be heading to the NAC to see “Come From Away”! I’ve listened to the soundtrack, and withmy mom and step-dad living in the Gander, Newfoundland area, this one hits close to home. Even just listening to the music, I laughed and even teared up….I can be a bit of a softy at times. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this show since it was announced last year. This coming weekend, I am going to stay in the area and tour around to check out some of the smaller festivals and events going on around the city, it’ll be one last chance to take in some summer weather (maybe).

Announcements:

I attended two major events last week. On Friday night, I was at the Hopped and Confused Festival put on by Mill Street Brewery. Then on Saturday, I spent the entire day and night out in Smith’s Falls at the “Smith’s Falls Shindig” that takes place at Tweed. I have a full review all prepared for each of the eleven concerts at Tweed, much like I did last year. However, with these events plus real-life stuff getting in the way, it’s been a busy weekend and I haven’t finalized the reviews yet, but they’ll be posted in the next day or two for sure! So stay tuned!!

Also, if you’re still reading this post, this is an early bird tip that you’d only know if you’re still with me!! I’m going to be giving away a pair of Cityfolk FULL FESTIVAL passes within the next week or two through social media. However, if you leave a comment on this post that you’re interested in these, you’ll get an extra TWO entries into the draw!!
