Covert Ottawa Weekly Update: Ottawa Events August 12th – 18th

Good Monday morning, I hope you had a great weekend! Now you can kick off your new work week with a quick run down of what’s going on in Ottawa. Like last week, it’s a very busy week with plenty of festivals, sports and live entertainment. Let’s have a look.

Continuing this week, you can find the Canadian Sunflower Festival which is held at Saunder’s Farm from the 14th to the 18th. This week also has some exciting annual festivals coming up, some of the biggest in our area! The 2019 Ottawa Greek Festival kicks off on August 15th and runs for an impressive 10 days, wrapping up on the 25th. Watch out kitchenware, you’re not safe anywhere!!

The Capital Fair starts this Friday and runs right until August 25th with a huge variety of shows and entertainment. There are just too many fun and crazy activities to list, so check out the website for the full daily schedule and plan what you want to see! This weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, take a stroll through the Westboro area and check out all the activities associated with Westboro Fuse! Many of the businesses and the community association come together for this fantastic two-day festival highlighting the best the community has to offer. Lastly, for festivals this week, Andrew Haydon Park plays host to the Water Lantern Festival on Saturday night.

The Redblacks are back home this week to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday. At 3-5, the Redblacks have been struggling this year, so let’s get out there and cheer them on; there’s still plenty of season left to turn it around! The Ottawa Champions are in town again this week for another three game series, this time against the New Jersey Jackals. Games are Friday to Sunday. After this one, there are only two series’ left for the summer, so make sure you get out there and support our local sports teams….and of course, eat some hot dogs and drink some beer (because what else do you have to do at a ball game?).

Now for live entertainment. It’s a HUGE week for concerts this week here in Ottawa with two major shows are hitting the Canadian Tire Centre. Thursday night is the “Twin of Evil, Hell Never Dies Tour” with a team up of Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson. What a crazy show this will be!!! Then, on a lighter note, and a much different audience, you can go and see Shawn Mendes on Sunday night, also at the Canadian Tire Centre. Wouldn’t it be funny if you swapped them for each other and didn’t tell the crowd? Just think about that reaction for a minute, oh the look of all the pre-teens having their eyes opened to metal/goth/whatever. Also live this week, but more in the “entertainment” category, you can find YouTube sensation, Kurtis Conner, at the Algonquin Commons Theatre on Wednesday night, and then Miss Vanessa Vanjie Mateo will be live Friday night also at the ACT. Lastly for live shows to highlight, Cody Coyote has an album release party at Queen Street Fare on Friday night.

Cirque du Soleil – Alegria continues this week and takes place almost every day under the big tents at the Zibi site just across from the War Museum in Gatineau. Tickets are selling fast so get yours soon! (ticketing options can also be found on the daily events on my site) The daily Northern Lights show continues each day on Parliament Hill, starting at 9:30 for the month of August. On Wednesday and Saturday nights, you can find the Casino Lac-Leamy International Fireworks competition. I highly recommend viewing these from the Bytown Museum where they are hosting a viewing event for each show.

For you movie buffs, Capital Pop-Up Cinema is hosting THREE outdoor movie nights this week. On Thursday night, you can go out and see “Highlander” at the Canadian War Museum, then on Friday night, they’ll be playing “Honey I shrunk the Kids” on Sparks Street, and finally, as part of the Westboro Fuse Festival, “The Princess Bride” will be shown on Saturday night.
