Covert Ottawa Weekly Update: Ottawa Events July 1st – 7th

Happy Canada Day!!! What a great time to celebrate our nation’s birthday!! I hope everyone has enjoyed their long weekend and are all refreshed after some extra time off.

This coming week is a big one for Ottawa. Some major festivals are kicking off so make sure to get out and enjoy them! First of all, the long-anticipated Ottawa Bluesfest starts on Thursday and runs every day until the 14th (Monday is an off day). There are a lot of great acts this year as usual. Also this week, the Music and Beyond festival starts on Thursday with the Opening Gala and then runs until the 18th. There are so many shows at great little intimate venues around the city. Check out their website for the full schedule! That’s not it for festival season though. The Third Amazing Thailand Festival is on Sunday at the Horticulture Building, and the Summer Picnic and Tigran Festival takes place at Vincent Massey Park, also on Sunday.

It’s a busy baseball week in the Capital. The Ottawa Champions take on the visiting Shikoku Islanders who are here all the way from Japan for a four-game series. There are loads of activities built up around these games, so check out all the details. After this series, the Champions have another three game home series against the Trois Rivieres Aigles starting Friday night. If baseball isn’t your thing, the Redblacks have a home game Friday night against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

For some live entertainment this week, you can catch the Warner Brothers Bugs Bunny at the Symphony production at the NAC. You can find this fun event on the 5th and 6th in Southam Hall. Bear and Co. is presenting this year’s “Shakespeare in the Park” play for the next month at different locations throughout the city. Check their site for full schedule details. It runs from July 3rd to August 4th. This year’s play is A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

 Where will I be?

Canada Day is house party day for me, so we’ve got some friends coming over for a BBQ, fireworks, and some social times. I’m looking forward to having a semi-quiet night at home. Starting Thursday, my attention shifts to Bluesfest. I spend most of my life at Lebreton Flats through most of the festival so I’m pretty stoked about that again this year!
