Covert Ottawa Weekly Update: Ottawa Events May 6th – 12th

I hope everyone had a great weekend! We couldn’t have asked for better weather, that’s for sure!! This next week coming up is a little lighter in volume for events, but the quality and high-profile events are HUGE!! Particularly on the weekend, there are so many choices for events that suit everyone’s desires.

I’m going to change up the format of this week and just get right into the highlights in all categories! First, for theatre, The Gladstone is starting their first of a two week run of the long anticipated Lysistrata produced by Theatre Kraken. This show looks amazing, and I can’t wait to see it!

This week has a couple huge events on during the weekend. The always popular and quite possibly the biggest attended weekend event in Ottawa is Comiccon, and it’s on this weekend at the EY Centre. Nerd/Geek/Dweeb or not, it is so much fun even if you just don’t care about this stuff, you’re going to have a blast!! Next, if you’re in Orleans, and you missed the last two weekends full of Poutine downtown, good news, you have another poutine fest in your ‘hood.

Beer lovers take note, the Ottawa Beer Festival is running all weekend at the Aberdeen Pavilion. This is the biggest beer festival in the Ottawa area and quite simply not to be missed! On the family side, the Ottawa Children’s Festival is running from Wednesday to Sunday at Lebreton Flats. I’ve been to this festival a couple of times, and it’s so much fun!! There are so many activities for the kids regardless of what they’re into or how old they are.

There are a few high end concerts in the capital this week. Godsmack is playing at the Canadian Tire Centre on Friday night, and Alessia Cara is on Saturday night at the National Arts Centre.

Two other events that are worth highlighting (in my humble opinion) are the Chocolate Affair Gala, which sells out each year, on Saturday night at the Shaw Centre and the Orleans Brewing Company grand opening on Saturday.

On the sports side, the Ottawa Fury FC take on North Carolina FC on Sunday afternoon at TD Place. If the Ottawa 67’s don’t actually sweep the championship series against Guelph, game 5 will be on Friday night at TD Place.

 Where will I be?

I have a couple big events planned this week. Thursday night, I’ll be at The Gladstone to see opening night of Lysistrata by Theatre Kraken. Saturday, I’ve got my tickets ready, and my costume prepared for a full day at Comiccon!! I plan on going live on Instagram to showcase all the great costumes that can be found at this amazing event so stay tuned!!

Announcements:

I have a contest running right now for two free tickets to the Orleans Beer Festival on June 6th. Check my social media for details, and you can enter on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook (or all three to increase your chances).

There is a great event coming up on May 18th that was announced last week. “Let’s Party with the PepTides” is happening at the Ottawa Art Gallery in support of Ottawa Salus. The PepTides is a nine-member band with a distinctive larger-than-life pop sound. The five vocalists and four instrumentalists draw on eclectic influences, with elements of funk, soul, gospel, folk, Latin and new wave. In 2017, the band was featured on the cover of Ottawa Life Magazine as “Ottawa’s Best Band.” Most recently, they won Ottawa’s Jim Beam Indies, and we wish them the very best as they advance to the Canadian Independent Music Awards on May 11! Proceeds from this fabulous evening will support Ottawa Salus and the life-changing housing and support services for people living with severe mental illness in our community.
