Covert Ottawa Weekly Update: Ottawa Events May 20th – 26th

Happy May long weekend!! I hope everyone is taking/has taken full advantage of the extra day off! It’s been a great weekend around town, so hopefully you were enjoying it. The weather wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t too bad either. This coming week is HUGE!! There are so many events coming up, it’s going to be hard to plan my time!!

First, on the theatre side, week #2 of Nunsense continues at the Kanata Theatre. Although I wasn’t able to get out and see it, I’ve heard it’s fantastic! At The Gladstone, you can catch the debut of the Under The Table Ensemble Theatre production of ‘Thief Society’ starting on Tuesday night for a two week run. Then starting Wednesday, the latest Suzart production of ‘Seussical’ kicks off for a week at Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe.

It’s a very busy week for concerts and live entertainment in Ottawa, both big and small. I’ll list only a few of the highlights. Monday night, you can see Hacksaw Jim Duggan (if you remember him like I do, I’m sorry to say that you’re old…haha) at GameZetera Orleans. On Tuesday, the long anticipated Twenty One Pilots concert is at the Canadian Tire Centre. Wednesday night, also at the Canadian Tire Centre is Slayer with Lamb of God! Thursday night at the NAC, you can take in Shanneyganock on one stage, or Rufus Wainright on another. Also on Thursday at the NAC, I highly recommend seeing Tara Shannon and The Commotions with their LymeHope Benefit concert where they’re raising money for Lyme disease research. Finally for the concert highlights, on Saturday, you can head back to the NAC and have a blast with Hawksley Workman.

Festival Season is in full swing, and there’s no shortage of festivals on this week. To save reading time, I’ll just list them for you here and you can click into which one(s) you’re going to attend. They include: Tulip Festival, Kanata RibFest, The Capital BBQ Festival, Ottawa Moonshine Festival, Lobsterfest, VivaFest 2019, and last but certainly not least, The Happening!

A full list of this week’s events can be found here!!

 Where will I be?

As you can see, it’s a busy weekend. I’m kicking off my week slaving in the back yard building a deck while staying hydrated with some beers….so let’s everyone hope for some sun to come our way!! Tuesday night, you’ll find me at the Gladstone taking in opening night of Thief Society. Wednesday night I’ll be at Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe for opening night of Seussical. So, expect to see a couple reviews coming your way after those shows. Thursday has the monthly Local Talks presentation at Shopify that I will likely attend. And finally, on Saturday I’ll be out at the annual Great Glebe Garage sale that’s always good for some entertainment (weather permitting).

I had a great opportunity last week to record a Podcast with Chad Vice from Nobodies are Somebodies. This fantastic weekly Podcast series focuses on regular people in the Ottawa area who are doing extraordinary things! I was honoured to be asked to fall into this category. The Podcast will air Monday evening at 6pm on the Nobodies are Somebodies website, so if you’re interested in learning the back story to Covert Ottawa Guy, or to find out more of what I do, have a listen; I hope to sound somewhat edumacated.

For movie fans, if you didn’t already hear, Capital Pop-Up Cinema released their summer schedule last week. This fantastic movie series is such a cool way to get out, eat some popcorn, and watch a nighttime movie in some great locations around the city. Check out their site for the full schedule!
