Covert Ottawa Weekly Update: Ottawa Events April 8th – 14th

Good Monday morning!! I hope you’re ready for another fun week in Ottawa! As usual, there’s a great variety of events in all corners of the city! Before we get into the main listing, I have to mention the best event of the week. It’s the 59th Anniversary of the Golden Palace, and once again this year, they’re celebrating with 50% eggrolls all day!! The line ups are crazy long every year, so if you’re going, prepare for a wait. It’s so worth it though!!

If you’re looking closely at the events calendar, you may notice that there’s no events Sunday night. That’s simply because I couldn’t find any until it dawned on me that it’s the day that we’ve all been waiting two years for: Season 8 of Game of Thrones!! So it appears as though event planners were aware and made the right choice.

There are a couple trade-show type events on this weekend. First, the highly anticipated Parent and Child Expo is on Saturday and Sunday at the Nepean Sportsplex. This is a “must attend” for you and your kids; it’s busy, but so much fun!! Secondly, the Ottawa Cottage Life and Backyard show is on Friday to Sunday at the EY Centre.

Now on to other events, with the Sens now officially on the golf course, we have to keep cheering on the Ottawa 67’s as they continue to dominate. As of tonight, they’re up 2-0 with a series lead against Sudbury. They play Tuesday and Thursday nights in Sudbury, and then are back in Ottawa on Saturday if game 5 is needed, so stay tuned!! The Ottawa Fury FC have their second home game of the season this week on Saturday afternoon against Loudoun United FC.

It’s a little slower this week on the theatre side. Heroes continues at the Gladstone for its second week. This show put on by Phoenix Players is running a promotion/charity type event. The Bums In Seats challenge for “Heroes” sets a target of 1000 seats sold for the run of the play. If the target is met or exceeded, two Phoenix Players members, André Dimitrijevic and Dr. John Kershman, have agreed to buy and maintain an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Gladstone Theatre.

Live entertainment and concerts are great this week! Tuesday night, The Tea Party returns to the Algonquin Commons Theatre for their second of two shows in as many months. Thursday night, at AllSaints Event Space, you can see Tara Holloway in a musical series each week highlighting a local musician in a “pay by donation” format. You get a delicious meal and some great socialization while you’re there! On Friday night, the always hilarious Jerry Seinfeld has two shows at the National Arts Centre, and finally, on Sunday at the Meridian Theatres @ Centrepointe, you can go see Show Tune Showdown. It’s a musical theatre performance game show with a unique blend of singing competition, and name that tune with loads of Broadway glitz thrown into the mix.

There is a great event coming up on May 18th that was announced last week. “Let’s Party with the PepTides” is happening at the Ottawa Art Gallery in support of Ottawa Salus. The PepTides is a nine-member band with a distinctive larger-than-life pop sound. The five vocalists and four instrumentalists draw on eclectic influences, with elements of funk, soul, gospel, folk, Latin and new wave. In 2017, the band was featured on the cover of Ottawa Life Magazine as “Ottawa’s Best Band.” Most recently, they won Ottawa’s Jim Beam Indies, and we wish them the very best as they advance to the Canadian Independent Music Awards on May 11!

Proceeds from this fabulous evening will support Ottawa Salus and the life-changing housing and support services for people living with severe mental illness in our community.
