Weekly Newsletter: Ottawa Events January 14th – 20th

Last week, I mentioned in my post that we’re back to reality here in Ottawa after the Christmas break. Well, as expected, reality kicked in this weekend and we had our first really cold weekend. With that, we all got to see Facebook pictures of our friends and family enjoying the sun and beaches in various resorts. Hopefully it’ll be your turn in the near future, and you can share in the sun basking. The one good thing with the awful cold wintery weather is that the Rideau Canal is fully open and we can go and freeze while skating as opposed to freezing while walking from the front door to the car!! Yay!! Last week was the second slow week in a row for Ottawa events, but that’s ok, it’s the same every year in January. That’s it now though, events are back with a vengeance this week with so many things to take in, some new, some old, and some odd!

A couple events to mention off the bat are the Dierks Bentley Concert on Friday night, and then the first major trade show of 2019 with the Home and Remodelling Show on Thursday to Sunday at the EY Centre. Just a little aside: When I was first entering the Home and Remodelling Show on the event calendar, WordPress was trying to auto-correct “Remodelling” and would only accept it with one “l” so me being a terrible speller as it is (my best friend and closest confidante is spell check) I accepted that and posted it with only one “l”. (I later fixed it) Stupid WordPress.

Aside from the usual events throughout the city, it looks like “random” would be a way to describe the variety of things going on. A few examples for this week would include, Unicorn watercolour painting, How I Met Your Mother trivia, Colouring Night, Nunchuck Training, Video Game Music Live, Princess PJ Party, Mariachi Night, Puppy Yoga, Lunar Eclipse Observation Party, and discovering the world of Churros. WOW….what a great week! You can jump on my events calendar to have a look at details for any/all of these unique events.

On the theatre side, Ottawa Little Theatre, is continuing their three-week run of Ripcord all week, and from what I’ve heard of it from others, it’s definitely worth going out to see. The Gladstone Theatre is back in action after a couple week hiatus and premiers Minding Frankie on Thursday night for a two week stint. This is written by the famous, Maeve Binchy, and adapted for theatre by Shay Linehan. Next on the theatre side, Sock ‘n’ Buskin Theatre is presenting Almost, Maine for four nights only, this Friday and Saturday as well as next Friday and Saturday at Carleton University.

Hockey is back this week as the Senators have returned from their sunny California tour to take on the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night. The Ottawa 67’s have two home games this week, Friday vs the Peterborough Petes for Dunder Mifflin Night, and then the Hamilton Bull Dogs on Saturday afternoon.

In case you didn’t catch it before….did you notice “Discover the World of Churros?!!?” It’s beavertail season, but Churros?? Yum!! “In a time of bea-ver tails, I was a Churro” Isn’t that a Beck song?

Where will I be?

Last week was pretty active for me as usual, so this week, I’ve only got one set plan. I will be attending Minding Frankie at The Gladstone Theatre on Thursday night, so you can stay tuned for a review on that Friday by around noon-ish. It looks incredible, so I’m pretty excited to see it! I have nothing else booked at this moment, but I know once I hit my couch when getting home from work, I need to get out and take in events. With so much going on this week, I’m sure I’ll be out and about so watch for the Covert Cruiser!!
