As you may know, this Hidden Ottawa section of my website is one of my favourites…I love unearthing hidden gems around the city and sharing them with all of you! I wish that I were able to do one every day, but the reality is, that in order to keep Hidden Ottawa as authentic as possible, I have to wait and save these posts for when I find an establishment that really impresses me! And this restaurant is one of those!
Located at 1491 Merivale Road, Casa Mexico is slightly off the beaten path. However, it is well worth seeking out! They are open Monday to Wednesday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, and Thursday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. They have a patio area out front, and there is a free parking lot in the rear. It is a local, family-run business, having come to Canada from Acapulco, Mexico in 2013.
I should preface this by noting that this is not a fancy restaurant by any means…in fact, it is very simple and casual, which I feel only adds to it’s charm! Casa Mexico offers traditional Mexican cuisine…and as someone who has spent a lot of time in small towns all over Mexico, I can say that it is very authentic! Everything from the décor to the menu to the great service makes you feel as though you are actually in Mexico, enjoying a delicious, fresh meal!
I really enjoy the food here! Incidentally, a LOT of their menu happens to be gluten free, given that it is mostly corn flour based, and there are a lot of vegetarian/vegan options available, which I think is great! It means that those who have food allergies/intolerances or just choose to eat a certain way can enjoy an amazing meal out!
While there, I ordered the nachos and the tostada, which were both smaller portions from the ‘starters’ side of the menu. Both were delicious, although I must say that they nachos were really the highlight of the meal for me. A VERY generous portion, topped with the freshest guacamole I have ever eaten, these were a real treat! The tostada, while also tasty, was very small in my opinion, and I wouldn’t order it again for that reason. However, the rest of the menu includes dozens of things: quesadilla, sopa de tortilla, gordita, a variety of tacos, enchiladas, and so much more, which appear to be a great value!
Casa Mexico also hosts a once-monthly Fiesta, which features dancing and live music! The next event will be on Saturday August 25th from 8:30 pm to midnight, with free entrance.
I would highly recommend visiting this amazing little restaurant if you get the chance! If you love authentic Mexican cuisine, you won’t be disappointed!
