Weekly Newsletter: Ottawa Events May 21st – 27th

It’s a good start to the week with most people enjoying the final day of the long weekend. The weather looks amazing so you should take advantage of it! I’m sad to say that Monday is the final day of the Tulip Festival so you should go and take in some of the festivities. No worries though, there are other festivals starting up right away! The Happening, in Wellington West/Hintonberg, kicks off Friday with their launch party at Lago, and then activities all weekend throughout the area. On the food side of festivals, Kanata Ribfest runs Friday – Sunday at Wesley Clover Park.

Theatre is once again very busy this week. At The Gladstone, Miss Shakespeare begins with its preview night on Wednesday and runs for a week and a half. Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike continues its second week at Kanata Theatre, and James and the Giant Peach begins at Centrepointe and runs Thursday – Sunday!

One of my favourite summer activities starts up this week as well. Capital Popup Cinema has two movies playing; the first is on Friday night on Sparks Street where you can get some popcorn and relax to Pitch Perfect, then on Saturday at the Parkdale Market, you can take in Labyrinth. On both nights, the movies start at dusk, so around 8pm. On the sports side, the Ottawa Champions have a three game homestand against the New Jersey Jackals from Monday through Wednesday including an afternoon game Monday. What better way to spend the nice sunny day, than at the ball park. Also, the Ottawa Fury FC play an afternoon game Friday against Bethlehem FC. Not too much for concerts this week, but if you are up for it, local favorite, Ambush is playing Friday night at the Barley Mow on Merivale. I reviewed their first visit to the newest Barley Mow location last year, so if you’re interested, have a read here!

My top three picks of the week:

  • Great Glebe Garage Sale (Saturday, Glebe)
  • Beach Party with Fiesta Cubana (Thursday, Westboro Beach) – Runs bi-weekly all summer
  • James and the Giant Peach (Thursday – Sunday, Centrepointe Theatres)

  • Last week, I attended Harry’s Musical World at Centre pointe. You can read my review here!
  • Stay tuned and follow closely, Cityfolk Festival will be announcing its line up this week!! I have a “strong guess” as to when exactly that will be but keep an eye on social media!
